The amazing conical 12.5 mm single screw extruder type LBE12.5-30 that can be fed with regular pellets

 

Featuring the new unique conical screw which has an infeed section of 20 mm or as large as with our regular 20 mm single screw extruder. The screw diameter is gradually decreasing for a length of 20 D, and then the last 6 D is with a diameter of 12.5 mm.

 

12The screw, as shown below, have practically same core diameter over the entire length which enables high torque applications for a very small screw diameter.

designed in house by our engineers, and the actual screw design was made for us by Dr. Chris Rauwendaal, a world-renowned expert on extrusion technologies. The purpose of the extruder is to be able to extrude minute amounts of resins and still be able to use regular resin pellet sizes. A straight 12.5 mm single screw extruder would have a much too small screw depth at the infeed section and then could only be fed with resins in powder forms.

 

This 12.5 mm conical single screw extruder can be used for compounding together with our small water bath type LWB40 and pelletizer LZ 80. But we think its main applications is with single downstream layers as well as co-extrusion multilayer film and sheets productions, where the very small output offers a very economical alternative against larger lines for research and educational purposes. The first production of these small extruders was used for two sets of a 3-layers co-ex Chill Roll and Film Blowing lines. Here the conical design of the extruder screws proved to give an excellent plasticization and dispersion of the resin, equal to what is obtained with larger single screw extruders, even those equipped with mixing screws.

 

LBE12.5-30 has the following features:

 

¨       Compact unit with a modern and pleasant design.

¨       The extruder has a screw diameter of 12.5 mm with a special large infeed section allowing feeding both powder and polymer pellets of up to 4 mm in size.

¨       Screw L/D ratio of 30

¨       Standard screw and barrel made of wear-resistant steel grades with deep nitriding.

¨       Screw speed infinite variable from 0 to 150 RPM.

¨       0.75 kW AC motor drive, coupled directly to a helical gearbox. The gearbox is flange-mounted directly to a thrust bearing housing containing the screw-connecting shaft, which is resting in a heavy-duty thrust bearing arrangement.

¨       Programmable frequency inverter for infinite variable screw-speed and high torque even at low screw speeds. Digital readout of the screw RPM and motor power on the control panel in percent of full load.

¨       Three heating zones on the barrel, all with forced air-cooling. Each zone with multiple rows of copper fins for high cooling efficiency, coupled with oversized cooling fans mounted at the rear of the extruder barrel assembly. Large wattage on heaters coupled with the efficient cooling system ensures very fast heating and cooling of each zone.

¨       Barrel with water-cooling of in-feed section as well as the lower part of hopper funnel.

¨       Stainless steel hopper, with a stainless steel 3-position turret safety valve wherein one position the resin is fed directly into the screws feeding section, in the other, the resin flow is shut off, and in the third position, the resin is discharged through a pipe on the front of the extruder barrel.

¨       LE 12-1Digital programmable set and readout temperature controllers for all three barrel heating zones. The controllers are coupled to solid-state relays for accurate heat control and are equipped with auto-tuning as well as linear compensation for very precise temperature regulation over the entire working range.

¨       Optional controllers with RS434 outlets for displaying registering of all extruder parameters on a PC

¨       C-Clamp type flange on the extruder head.

¨       Full steel cover over the extruder barrel with air venting grid on top.

¨       Convenient control cabinet built into the lower part of the extruder body with clear viewing from the operator position.

¨       Sub-cabinet with casters which will convert the extruder to a floor version.

¨       Max output based on LDPE up to 2 kg per hour at max screw speed 150 RPM

For general compounding of PE, PP, PS, ABS, etc, non-vented type equipped as following:

 

¨       Screw and barrel in high-grade nitride hardened steel, screw diameter 20 mm and L/D ratio of 30.

¨       30 L/D screw with Maddock mixing at 21D and pineapple mixing at screw tip. This screw gives a good mixing and homogenization of the resin with any eventual additives. The extruder can also be supplied with a plain screw which can be useful if the application is for checking gels in a resin, where minimum shear is normally required.

¨       Water-cooling of feed section as well as the lower part of hopper funnel.

¨       Large in-feed opening in barrel for efficient feeding of both pellets and powders.

¨       Screw speed infinite variable from 0 to 150 RPM.

¨       Large oversized 1.5 kW AC motor drive coupled directly to a helical gearbox. The gearbox is flange-mounted directly to a thrust bearing housing containing the screw-connecting shaft, which is resting in a heavy-duty trust bearing arrangement.

¨       Programmable frequency inverter for infinite variable screw-speed and high torque even at low screw speeds. Digital readout of the screw RPM and motor power (Amp) on the control panel.

¨       Three heating zones on the barrel, all with forced air-cooling. Each zone with multiple rows of copper fins for high cooling efficiency, coupled with oversized cooling fans mounted at the rear of the extruder barrel assembly. Large wattage on heaters coupled with the efficient cooling system ensures very fast heating and cooling of each zone.

¨       Digital programmable set and readout temperature controllers for all three barrel heating zones. ¨       Optionally available with bimetallic barrel giving optimum wear and chemical resistance.

¨       Screw with Maddock mixing section at 22 D and with pineapple mixing at screw tip. The compression ratio of 1 to 3. Please see later pages for other screw types including our modular screw elements where you can build your own screw configuration.

¨       Screw speed infinitely variable from 0 to 300 RPM.

¨       4 kW AC motor drive, coupled directly to an inline heavy-duty helical gearbox, which in turn is connected to an individual housing containing the oversized thrust and position bearings for the screw drive.

¨       Optional 5.5 kW drive with high torque gearbox, recommended for processing of rigid PVC as well as difficult to extrude polymers. The screw speed is here infinitely variable from 0 to 200 RPM.

¨       Programmable frequency inverter for infinite variable screw speed and high torque even at low screw speeds. Digital readout of the screw RPM and motor power in percent of the full load from instruments mounted on the control panel.

¨       Four heating zones on the barrel, all with air-cooling. Each zone is equipped with high efficient air-cooling where copper sheets are mounted below the band heaters ending up in a multitude of fins. These fins catch the cold air and conduct it directly to the barrel. The sirocco type of cooling fans is all mounted in the extruder sub-cabinet and connected to each zone with hoses.  The large wattage on the band heaters coupled with the efficient cooling system ensures very fast heating and cooling of each zone.

¨       Extruder head with chromed C-Clamp, equipped with two isolated handles and a single clamping screw for easy operation. Breaker plate for the screens is situated at extruder head before downstream die for easy access.

¨       Full steel cover over the entire extruder barrel with air venting grid on top.

¨       Modern designed extruder body where all components are fully enclosed.

This extruder can also be supplied with high torque drive, using same 4 kW motor but a larger gear ratio. In this case, the torque is increased by 30%, but the max screw RPM is only 200. This extruder version has the model number LE25-30/C/13-4, and there is no extra charge for this.

 

Also, we can supply a larger motor drive of 5.5 kW, including a higher gear ratio, which will increase the screw torque with over 50%. Also here the max RPM will be 200

 

 

 


Vented 25 mm, 30 L/D single screw extruder

type LE25-30/CV

 

Text Box: NEW MODERN AND PRACTICAL DESIGN The vented version of our 25 mm extruder has been developed with a special screw design, which ensures very good feeding properties without material bleeding out of the vent. The screw designs have been tested and proven with many different polymers such as LD & HD-PE, PP, PS, ABS, Nylon, PC, and PET. The features are the same as listed above for our non-vented version with the following additions:

 

¨         Vented screw design with Maddock mixing section at 15 D followed by the decompression and venting zone. The screw at the vent and to the end has double flights for optimum feeding property. The tip of the screw is equipped with split open flanges for additional mixing.

¨         Large vent opening with housing made of Stainless Steel. It is also equipped with stainless steel swing open lid with large Polycarbonate window and with a pipe connection for the vacuum pump. The open swing lid is equipped with rubber seal to give a tight vacuum fit to vent.

¨         Built-in vane type vacuum pump driven by a 0.3 kW motor and with an air capacity of 6,000 liter per hour. A large stainless steel mesh filter protects the vacuum pump, and the mesh is housed in a see-through Polycarbonate container which can be easily unscrewed to clean the filter. The pump inlet is further protected with a small paper filter. Including a vacuum dial gauge and release valve mounted on the top of the extruder barrel behind the vent opening. The ON/OFF selector switch for the vacuum pump is located just below the vent opening and is lighted red when the pump is on.

Also here the vented version of our 30 mm extruder has been developed with optimum performance and still no resin bleeding at the vent. The screw is designed for processing of most polymers and has the same features as described for the non-vented version as well as:

 

¨     Vented screw design with Maddock mixing section at 15 D followed by the decompression and venting zone. The screw at the vent and to the end has double flights for optimum feeding property. The tip of the screw is equipped with split open flanges for additional mixing.

¨     Large vent opening made of Stainless Steel. Equipped with stainless steel swing open lid with large Polycarbonate window and with a pipe connection for eventual vacuum pump. The open swing lid is equipped with rubber seal to give a tight vacuum fit to vent.

¨     Built-in vane type vacuum pump driven by a 0.3 kW motor and with an air capacity of 6,000 liters per hour. A large stainless steel mesh filter protects the vacuum pump, and the mesh is housed in a see-through Polycarbonate container which can be easily unscrewed to clean the filter. The pump inlet is further protected with a small paper filter. Including a vacuum dial gauge and release valve mounted on the top of the extruder barrel behind the vent opening. Maximum output with our 45 mm non-vented single screw extruder

Scientific Vented version 45 mm single screw extruder with 30 L/D, type LE45-30/CV

Also here the vented version of our 45 mm extruder has been developed with optimum performance and still no resin bleeding at the vent. The screw is designed for processing of most polymers and has the same features as described for the non-vented version as well as:

 

¨     LE 40-30 CV_2Vented screw design with Maddock mixing section at 15 D followed by the decompression and venting zone. The screw at the vent and to the end has double flights for optimum feeding property. The tip of the screw is equipped with split open flanges for additional mixing.

¨     Large vent opening made of Stainless Steel. Equipped with stainless steel swing open lid with large shock-resistant window and with a pipe connection for eventual vacuum pump. The open swing lid is equipped with rubber seal to give a tight vacuum fit to vent.

¨     Heavy-duty vacuum pump of water ring type with very high vacuum down to 33 Torr, complete with water container as well as inlet filter.Output around 60 kg of virgin LD-PE at a max screw speed of 200 RPM.

Optionally these extruder controls can be incorporated on a central control panel, for instance when used for a co-extrusion line. The picture to the right shows the panel for a 3-layer co-ex film line, and the right on the screen are the three extruders shown. Here all parameters on extruders and downstream film blowing unit are controlled by touching the symbol respectively.
